The mainstream media loves to slant the news to tell us the details of certain cities – particularly when it comes to crime. The reality is that crime is happening all over the country. We need to know the FACTS so that we can make the best decisions. It impacts where we live, where we work, and even where we decide to take vacations.

The most important statistic to pay attention to when it comes to crime is the violent crime rate. By comparing the violent crime rates around the country, we can see where the most dangers lie.

Here are some of the cities with the HIGHEST violent crime rates:

  • Memphis, TN
  • Louis, MO
  • Detroit, MI
  • Little Rock, AR
  • Pueblo, CO
  • Tacoma, WA
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Rockford, IL
  • Springfield, MO

Memphis tops the list because it has a violent crime rate of 7913 out of 100,000 people. That basically means that 8 out of every 100 people will be a victim of a violent crime. How comfortable are you with those odds?

You may be asking, at this point, what is considered a “violent” crime. Well, it depends on who you ask. The FBI defines it to include four types of crimes: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Essentially, the crimes you would never want committed against you because you may not survive.

Now, depending on the city or state you live in, violent crime may also be considered domestic violence, hate crimes, terrorism, and even stalking.

With the way that crimes can be defined, it’s important that you do your research.

Whether you’re planning on moving to a particular city or simply looking at going on vacation, be sure to check out the crime rates. Don’t just look at the statistics, though. Dig into what crimes are being committed. It allows you to make better decisions about going there without depending on the mainstream media. Who knows – that added research may just save your life.
