If you know much about Kristi Noem, it’s likely that she’s not afraid to take on the political left. Her most recent experience with this is standing against retail giant Target and their effort to support the demolishing of Mount Rushmore.
As you likely know, Target is about as left-leaning as they come these days. But it’s not just LGBT, BLM, etc., that they support. Additionally, it’s groups like NDN Collective, which has decided to target Mount Rushmore in an effort to not only return the land to indigenous peoples but also to destroy what they call an “international symbol of white supremacy.”
According to NDN’s “LANDBACK” program, the idea is to one day return all national parks and lands back to Native Americans, as they were “stolen” from them over the centuries.
“The closure of Mount Rushmore, return of that land and all public lands in the Black Hills, South Dakota is our cornerstone battle.” They explain that to “truly dismantle white supremacy and systems of oppression, we have to go back to the roots. Which, for us, is putting indigenous lands back in indigenous hands.”
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that the way colonizing whites treated indigenous peoples of North America and such was atrocious. Those people suffered more hate and violence at our hands than most of us will ever even know about, let alone imagine.
So to say some reparations or apology, even massive gestures from the US government, isn’t deserved is wholly untrue.
However, I’m not sure that destroying monuments like Mount Rushmore is how we go about that.
Besides, this is the same group who believes that the US military, as well as the law enforcement system, is corrupt and “violent.” Another of their lesser desires is to eventually “demilitarize” the US. They also want to give Israel back to the “Palestinians.”
Needless to say, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem isn’t about to let those ideas prevail.
As she recently tweeted, “Target’s leftist execs support giving away Mount Rushmore. Not on my watch. America’s symbol of Freedom will endure.”
